Love for the craft
When we saw their creations at the Con B de Bici Festival, we fell in love with them at once, their work conveys good taste and love for the craft through each of their well born seams.
We talked to Melina Carrasco about how these modern craftsmen and women work at their Madrid studio and shop. A little paradise for those lovers of the strictest retro vintage style, where you can redo your grandfather’s bicycle or get hold of one of their cute, basic, indestructible charmingly handmade finished accessories.
Who is behind “Dale Pedales”?
David and Libran are in charge of the remodeling, recycling and general redoing within the bicycle repair shop; what Favio and I do is basically everything regarding the accessories. Favio does the sewing of the handlebars, the aprons and is now developing a clothes line for all those cyclists who love the retro aesthetics (such as those cycling shorts in the picture). Me, apart from developing my handbag brand, OFICIO, I also help with the design and manufacturing of backpacks, saddlebags, etc…bags which can be easily attached to the bicycle and all the leather and technical high endurance canvases.
Which are your main inspirations and references when working on a collection?
The designs we have come from the reinterpretation of classical models, such as the tool blanket attached after the seat, “the mountain sack” and “the backpack cycle” which are typical mountain backpacks now adapted to the cyclists’ needs of today. We are developing “the sailor sack” using some old hooks we got from a military warehouse, we will adapt it to the cyclist environment with a comfortable strap.
There are four heads and eight hands working here together… are you at each other’s throats or is harmony a constant in your universe?
We are a team, we all help each other but each of us is a master in each task we carry out, this is a shop which takes good care of its concept and “look and feel”, and clients who come over love old antique bicycles, and they also like the retro design we offer. All sorts of creative people, like musicians, also come around and bring ideas and add up to a community of people who love bicycles. Saturday night jam sessions, summer night rides, or pub crawling around the neighbourhood are all part of the fun.
